My Albums of 2011

A lot of people have written copious words on these albums and have done a far better job of explaining their qualities than I could manage. But these are the albums which I have had on heavy rotation this year, and enjoyed the most. The top 5 in particular are each incredible albums which will stay with me long beyond this year.

My album of the year:

1. Destroyer — ’Kaputt’

Top 10:

2. The Antlers — ‘Burst Apart’

3. Epic45 — ’Weathering’

4. Bon Iver — ’Bon Iver’

5. Peaking Lights — ‘936’

6. Radiohead — ‘The King of Limbs

7. Real Estate — ’Days’

8. When Saints Go Machine — ‘Konkylie’

9. The War on Drugs — ‘Slave Ambient’

10. I Break Horses — ‘Hearts’

Honourable mentions:

11. Trouble Books & Mark McGuire — ’s/t’

12. Wild Beasts — ‘Smother’

13. Beirut — ‘The Rip Tide’

14. Lanterns on the Lake — ‘Gracious Tide, Take Me Home’

15. Walls — ‘Coracle’

Gigs of 2011

Sufjan Stevens — Royal Festival Hall, London

Bon Iver — HMV Hammersmith Apollo, London

Olafur Arnalds — Notting Hill Tabernacle, London

Wild Beasts — Y Theatre, Leicester

Timber Timbre — Union Chapel, London

Sufjan was incredible — one of the most complete, joyous gigs I have ever had the pleasure to witness. Bon Iver was equally spellbinding, as 5,000 people sat and watched in quiet awe.
